Winter Saltwater Fishing Florida

fishing kayak

The winter months of Florida don't feature large, impressive fish schools but there are still plenty opportunities for saltwater fishing. Snook and other gamefish can be driven up into rivers and canals by the cold. However, this can lead to high concentrations of some species. Brackish rivers can also be affected by this phenomenon, and can be home to freshwater species such a largemouth bass or catfish.

Red snapper

Red snapper is an excellent choice for winter saltwater fishing. Red snapper can only be caught during certain months of the year. These are weekends leading up Memorial Day, and will end September 7, 2021. Consider these tactics to maximize your chances for catching a good fish. Do your research.

Cobia

Cobia fishing is an excellent option for winter saltwater fishing trips. Cobia are strong, predatory fish. They eat mainly crustaceans but will also eat other fish. Larger pelagic species are more likely to prey upon young cobia. They migrate throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and into the Atlantic Ocean. The cobia migrate south to the Florida Keys during the winter months from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Cobia can be caught without a federal permit. You just need to use approved gear such as automatic reels and bandit gear.

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are a very popular fish in coastal Atlantic waters, especially in the Gulf of Mexico. They are also common to see fishing for on grass flats. It is easily identifiable on the water by its distinctive vertical black-white stripes. Sheepshead live in varying depths, from backwaters to offshore reefs. Florida winters bring cold fronts that can cause fish to move inshore to eat.

Barracuda

While the Florida Keys is known for its bones, it's possible to catch some delicious fish while saltwater angling in Florida. Although Barracuda used to be a popular winter flats species, they are now almost impossible to catch. That's why the Lower Keys Guides Association has launched the Save the Barracuda Campaign. The group has urged Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, to establish harvest regulations to help protect endangered fish. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission held two public meetings. It is expected that a draft rule will be published this fall.

Pompano fish

The early season cold front drove the pompano south. Now, you can catch them all year. Although you can still catch trout redfish, Spanish mackerel and redfish, you can also enjoy a delicious pompano. As long as you're willing to put in some time and effort, you'll be rewarded with tasty meals. Florida Pompano saltwater fishing for Pompano fish

Redfish

Although there are many ways you can catch redfish in Winter, one of the best options is to fish mangroves. Redfish like to be fed in cooler water as they can get too hot in summer shallow waters. Send a dead bait to the mangrove roots if you want to catch redfish. Redfish will gravitate to bait that has a salty flavour and will root around it until they reach it.

Blackfin tuna

Blackfin tuna is a small fish that lives on the continental shelf, from the Carolinas southward to Brazil. Global warming is likely extending their range north, but their current stock numbers appear healthy. The Fish and Wildlife Commission of Florida recently established new daily and weekly blackfin tuna catch limits, two per person and ten for boats. Blackfins can be found all over Florida, unlike skipjacks.
